Alexey Maksimovich Kaledin (Russian: Алексей Максимович Каледин; 24 October 1861 – 11 February 1918) was a Don Cossack Cavalry General who commanded the 12th Cavalry Division and Russian Eight Army during World War I. He also led the Don Cossack White movement in the opening stages of the Russian Civil War.

The United States steamer Connecticut, Commander WOODHULL, from Bermuda on the 21st inst., having left this port on the 17th inst., for the purpose of intercepting the steamship Nashville, said to have left Charleston for England, with Messrs. SLIDELL and MASON on board, returned to this port yesterday. The Nashville had not been heard of at Bermuda. The Connecticut proceeded to the Navy-yard.

ARREST OF A SWINDLER. PETER DEMBEY, a colored man, who claims to be a fugitive slave from the State of Maryland, was yesterday arrested and taken before Justice CONNOLLY, at the Tombs, upon the compliant of CHARLES A. DANA, of No. 154 Nassau-street, who charges that the prisoner applied to him for a sum of money sufficient to take him to Canada, at the same time exhibiting a letter, purporting to have been signed by Mr. GEORGE WILKENS, of Trenton, N.J., in which the bearer was represented as a worthy object of charity, and representing that Mr. DANA would aid him in his escape to Canada. The complainant at once recognized the swindler as a man who, two years since, had applied to him for money for the same pretended purpose, and to whom he had then given a sum sufficient to have taken him where he desired to go. Mrs. MARY S. TREMBLY, of No. 21 East Twenty-fifth-street, was called as a witness, and testified that DEMBEY was in the habit of practicing these impositions upon the public. The Justice committed him to the Workhouse for [???] months.

Gen. McCLELLAN was yesterday again at his headquarters across the Potomac, and everything along the National lines remained quiet. There has been no renewal of the fighting near Leesburgh, but we hear that the enemy have shown themselves in force above and below, and it has been thought advisable to withdraw our troops for the present, from the Virginia side. From the best data at present attainable, it is probable that the number of our men killed on Monday was 79; wounded, 141; missing, prisoners, and not yet returned to their commands, about 400 -- in all, say 620, which figure will probably be considerably reduced by those returning to camp.
