Back in the late 1970's, when Richard Levin was a young assistant economics professor at Yale University, A. Bartlett Giamatti, then Yale's president, detected something singular about him. One day he confided to the headmaster of the school Mr. Levin's children attended, "Some day, he's going to be president of Yale." When word got back to Mr. Levin, he was perplexed. "He saw something in me that I did not yet see in myself," Mr. Levin said in an interview yesterday, just before Yale University announced that he had been named president.

IT always makes me nervous when I hear people say "we are working on our relationship," because that sounds like trouble, big trouble. This is exactly where Bobby Bonilla stands with his hometown of New York. They are working on their relationship, and I'm not sure it can be saved. Bonilla just may not be cool enough to have a long career in New York. Nothing against him. This is a hard town these days, and only the strong survive.

Pressmen at Post Refuse To Print Today's Issue

In what union leaders at The New York Post described as a showdown over work rules, the paper's pressmen abandoned the presses late last night, thwarting attempts to print a Friday issue. Labor and management almost immediately traded charges over who was responsible for the disruption of a press run of over 400,000 copies.

The Pacific Telesis Group, the regional Bell operating company based in San Francisco, said yesterday that it would take charges totaling $2 billion, or $4.91 a share, in the first quarter of 1993 to reflect changes in accounting for retiree health benefits and other post-employment benefits. As a result, Pactel will post an unspecified loss for 1993. In 1992, the company earned $1.14 billion, or $2.83 a share, on revenue of $9.94 billion.

MACY REACHES AGREEMENT WITH LABOR UNION ON BENEFITS

R. H. Macy & Company and the union representing 4,000 workers at four of its New York area stores agreed yesterday to a labor contract. Macy said the collective bargaining agreement, which runs through January 1999, would allow it to cut employee health-care costs. The retailer will now pay 70 percent of the cost of health benefits, rather than all costs. In exchange, the workers will receive wage increases and improved pension benefits, Macy said. The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January 1992, said the new contract would help it return to profitability, but declined to estimate its savings.

AMOCO CHEMICAL COMPLETES SALE OF ITS WELCHEM UNIT

The Amoco Chemical Company said yesterday that it had completed the sale of Welchem Inc., a maker of chemicals for the petroleum industry, to the Petrolite Corporation for an undisclosed price. Petrolite is a St. Louis-based maker of specialty chemicals and services. The sale is the latest in a series by Amoco Chemical, a unit of the Amoco Corporation, which is based in Chicago.

NORTHWEST AGREES TO PAY $5 MILLION FOR LONDON ROUTE

Northwest Airlines said yesterday that it planned to buy USAir's Baltimore-to-London route for $5 million and move the route's terminus to Detroit by mid-June. The airline already has direct flights to London's Gatwick airport from Minneapolis/St. Paul and Boston. "Detroit is our largest domestic hub, providing a strong flow both of local origin and connecting passengers for domestic flights," said John Dasburg, Northwest's chief executive.

CSX SEES $61 MILLION CHARGE FOR CHANGES AT SEA-LAND

The CSX Corporation said yesterday that it would take an after-tax charge of $61 million in the first quarter to reorganize its Sea-Land Service Inc. unit, where it intends to lay off up to 600 people. Sea-Land, the transportation company's container-shipping subsidiary, is trying to lower costs, CSX's chairman, John Snow, said. The unit will lay off about 7 percent of its work force of 8,700 as it consolidates in Europe.

BOEING LAYS OFF ANOTHER 430 WORKERS AT KANSAS PLANT

The Boeing Company's plant in Wichita, Kan., laid off 430 employees this week and issued layoff notices to 394 others. The Wichita plant, which works on all of Boeing's commercial programs, has cut 860 jobs this year due to weakness in the airline industry. Boeing will cut the work force in Wichita by about 6,000 this year and about 1,000 in the first half of 1994, a spokesman said.
