Hiss seeking to Discredit 'Pumpkin Papers'

Alger Hiss sues Fed Govt to obtain documents and film that he believes will discredit 'pumpkin papers' as forgeries and clear him of his 25-yr-old perjury conviction, news conf; discloses document described as FBI memo which suggests that key typewriter introduced in evidence at trial might not have been the one that was in Hiss home, the typewriter that Govt alleged had been used by Mrs Hiss to transcribe secret documents; summarizes case; involvement of then-Repr Nixon and Whittaker Chambers in case noted; Hiss also sues for number of documents, all under Freedom of Information Act; 3 pol scientists have filed additional suits for some of 53,000 pages of documents in case; William A Reubin says films being sought are in possession of US Atty for Southern Dist of NY; notes controversy over age of films; economist Stephen W Salant says at news conf that suit he is bringing specifically seeks documents bearing on what he says was 'FBI's apparent failure to pursue Kodak's offer to perform a chemical analysis that would definitely date the films'; Dr Peter H Irons discloses what he says is FBI memo written before trial concerning search for old Hiss typewriter; memo quoted; Hiss notes then-Pres Nixon told John W Dean 3d in Watergate tapes that 'We got the typewriter; we got the pumpkin papers'; Hiss indicates that this coupled with FBI document suggest that typewriter Hiss introduced at trial was left for him to find and was not correct one; Hiss's lawyer Randy Walster notes possibility of subpoenaing Nixon; illus of Hiss and Reuben (M)
