Texaco's Appeal

Texaco Inc., as expected, asked a Texas appeals court in Houston to reverse its decision last month upholding most of an $11.1 billion judgment against the company, or order a new trial in its three-year-old legal dispute with the Pennzoil Company. The appellate court is expected to make its final ruling by mid-May. Lawyers for Texaco have said they will take the case to the Texas Supreme Court and, if necessary, the United States Supreme Court, if the appellate court does not change its ruling.

Allegheny Stake

The New York money manager Mario J. Gabelli and a group of companies he controls have purchased a 7.23 percent stake in Allegheny International Inc. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Gabelli said he had no plans to seek control of the Pittsburgh-based appliance manufacturer. Allegheny has agreed to a $500 million leveraged buyout by the Sunter Acquisition Corporation, a unit of the First Boston Corporation. A class-action suit seeking to block the merger has been filed on behalf of Allegheny shareholders contending that the price is inadequate.

Hambrecht Offers A Mutual Fund

Hambrecht & Quist Inc. said it had begun its first mutual fund, H&Q Healthcare Investors. The closed-end fund will focus on emerging-growth companies and will be at least 80 percent invested in industries such as biotechnology, diagnostics, health care services, pharmaceuticals and medical products. Hambrecht said up to 25 percent of the fund's investments could contain venture capital.

Borg-Warner's Stock Rises Again
