Cutbacks by Network News Ground Bush's Press Plane

In a symbol of the financial retrenchment taking place throughout the network news business, the press plane covering the President of the United States was canceled by the White House for a trip last weekend after the networks significantly reduced their staffing on the Presidential fishing vacation. Joe Peyronnin, the vice president of CBS News, called it "a sign of the times in network television."

35-40 News Managers Lose Jobs, Union Says

Thirty-five to 40 management workers who supervised mailers, paperhandlers and pressmen at The Daily News were laid off over the weekend, the head of the Allied Printing Trades Council said yesterday. The News refused to confirm or deny the statement by the head of the union umbrella group, George E. McDonald.

Yanks' Sanderson Sidesteps Women in Locker Room

Teacher Says Her Conviction Was a Surprise

In a newspaper interview from prison, a high school teacher convicted of conspiring with a student to kill her husband has conceded acting oddly after the killing, but said, "Nobody gave me the 22-year-old widow's handbook." The teacher, Pamela Smart, also said she did not expect to be convicted. "I thought there were two options: I would be found not guilty, or there would be a hung jury," she was quoted as saying Friday, in a telephone interview with The Boston Globe from the New Hampshire State Prison for Women here. "I never conceived this would become a reality."

Press Empire Wields Great Power in Spain

Jesus de Polanco is used to being called Spain's Rupert Murdoch or Robert Maxwell, but he quickly dismisses the analogy as inaccurate. "They are businessmen and financiers," he said recently. "I think of myself as a professional of communications and culture." Furthermore, Mr. Polanco said, his multimedia group has grown into an $800 million-a-year operation by reinvesting profits rather than borrowing. "I am much more prudent than they are," he said. "Our editorial and audio-visual groups have no debts."

Ames Extension

Ames Department Stores Inc. said it had received an 18-month extension through Oct. 24, 1992, on $250 million of revolving credit from a group of banks led by the Chemical Banking Corporation. Ames, which is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, said the extension, together with its operating cash flow, would be adequate to support seasonal working capital requirements in the fall. It said its current fiscal-year budget reflects an expected operating profit by the end of the year.

Newsprint Prices Cut

Abitibi-Price Inc. said today that it had canceled its Jan. 1 newsprint price increase, reducing its list price for newsprint to $685 a ton, from $720. The price cut is effective April 1. "Demand growth was lower than expected," said Ed Ahern, the company's marketing director. According to newspaper reports, Canadian Pacific Forest Products Ltd. also cut its list prices for newsprint.
