CNN News Co-Anchor To Be '20/20' Reporter

Catherine Crier, a co-anchor of CNN's evening news, will join the ABC News program "20/20" as a correspondent in early 1993, it was announced yesterday by Roone Arledge, the president of ABC. Ms. Crier joined CNN in October 1989 as a co-anchor of its evening news program, with Bernard Shaw, and was also a co-anchor of CNN's "Inside Politics '92." She was also the host of "Crier and Company," a live half-hour talk show featuring a panel of female experts discussing national and international issues.

American Reliance Group Inc. of Lawrenceville, N.J., is discussing a possible sale with several potential buyers, as the troubled insurance company posted a third-quarter loss and increased for the second time its loss estimate from Hurricane Andrew. The company raised its estimated gross loss in Florida by 13 percent, to $565 million, because of unexpected damage to its commercial property.

The Georgia-Pacific Corporation, seeking to pay down its nearly $6 billion debt, said yesterday that its roofing-materials business was for sale. An official with the Atlanta-based paper-products giant told analysts that the business would fetch more than $40 million, said a Prudential Securities analyst, Mark Rogers, who called the move "a step in the right direction." Georgia-Pacific has been selling what it deems nonessential businesses in hopes of reducing its nearly $6 billion debt load, most of which was incurred during the $3.8 billion takeover of Great Northern Nekoosa Paper and Pulp in 1990.

WAL-MART PLANS TO OPEN 155 MORE STORES WITHIN YEAR

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open 155 stores this fiscal year, the company's chief financial officer, Paul R. Carter, said yesterday. Speaking at an industry conference in Baltimore, Mr. Carter said Wal-Mart also planned to expand 91 existing stores and relocate 69 others. Of these 69 stores, he said, 24 will be supercenters. The company also plans to open 48 Sam's Clubs stores this year. In its 1993 fiscal year, the company plans to open an additional 155 stores while expanding or relocating 100 stores, Mr. Carter said.

Shaes of Fleet Financial Group Inc. fell as much as 4.4 percent today after a CBS television broadcast reported charges that its mortgage lending practices in Georgia were intended to profit at the expense of minority homeowners. "We take strong exception to their charge we actively seek to foreclose on mortgage holders," said Thomas Lavelle, a spokesman for the bank holding company. "Also, the charge we prey on lower-income people is simply untrue."

Fiat's Output Goal in Poland

Fiat S.p.A. expects its newly acquired Polish subsidiary, Fiat Auto Poland, to produce 80,000 Fiat 500 cars this year, 20,000 below its original target, as a result of a 54-day strike that ended in early September, a Fiat official said today. Production at the Tychy plant in southern Poland is 620 cars a day, the official said. The factory has been producing a version of the Fiat 500, a small two-door model with little resemblance to the original 500.
