Black, will not affect his ability to buy The Daily News, the president of his holding company , said yesterday. "It has absolutely no effect," said F. David Radler, president of Hollinger Inc., Mr. Black's holding company, which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Mr. Radler added that Hollinger remained eager to buy the bankrupt New York paper.

GITANO GROUP ASKS LENDERS FOR ADDITIONAL FINANCING

The Gitano Group Inc. said yesterday that it was asking its lenders for additional financing. Gitano fell $1, to $4.125, in New York Stock Exchange trading. The volume, 536,000 shares, compared with average daily volume of 78,600. Gitano, an apparel company based in New York, said negotiations with lenders were still in progress. Peter Kells, who became chief financial officer on June 15, said Gitano would begin renegotiating lending agreements with its banks later this summer. He added that current credit arrangements would expire on Jan. 1.

A Federal judge has dismissed the jury in a patent lawsuit between the Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. over the software used in computer chips. Federal District Judge William Ingram will hear the rest of the case without a jury. Michele Bourdon, an Intel spokeswoman, said the companies agreed to dismiss the jury, an option that either company could have exercised under court rules. "By going before the judge, we can get this taken care of a lot quicker," Ms. Bourdon said.

MENTOR GRAPHICS' STOCK OFF 24% ON EXPECTED LOSS

The Mentor Graphics Corporation's stock dropped $2.375 yesterday, or 24 percent, to a 52-week low of $7.50 in over-the-counter trading, after the company said it would report a second-quarter loss. Mentor blamed the weak Japanese economy and delays in introducing products for the earnings shortfall. "It appears that poor Japanese order performance has combined with product transition issues for disappointing quarterly results," said Thomas Bruggere, Mentor Graphics' chairman and chief executive. The earnings problems probably will continue into the third quarter, Mr. Bruggere said.

UNITED AIR TO BEGIN FIRST NONSTOP U.S.-CHINA FLIGHTS

United Airlines Inc. opens the first nonstop flights from the United States to China today with three-day-a-week direct service between San Francisco and Shanghai, continuing to Beijing. United has served the two cities through Tokyo since 1986. The new service aboard Boeing 747's will be the first direct link to China's capital and to Shanghai, the world's sixth-largest city. The direct flights will continue through September, when service will resume through Tokyo.

Drugs Bill Advances

The Senate Labor Committee approved a bill today that would give manufacturers of "orphan drugs" exclusive rights to sell the drugs for nine years or until they take in $200 million in sales. Orphan drugs treat rare diseases with so few patients that companies often cannot make money on them in a competitive market. The bill is an amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which currently guarantees orphan drugs seven years market exclusivity regardless of sales.
