McCormick & Company said yesterday that it had bought Grupo Pesa, a Mexican seasoning company, for an undisclosed amount. McCormick said Grupo Pesa, based in Mexico City, was a leading flavoring supplier to Mexico's food processing industry. Pesa produces spices, herbs and seasoning blends. McCormick, based in Sparks, Md., produces spices, seasonings, flavorings and specialty foods. It has had operations in Mexico since 1947.

AMGEN SHARES FALL ON EARNINGS DISAPPOINTMENT

Shares of Amgen Inc. fell $3 yesterday, to $44, after the company reported earnings that were lower than expected. Amgen was by far the most active stock in Nasdaq trading, where more than 11.7 million shares changed hands. In earlier trading, shares fell as much as $5. Amgen is a biotechnology company based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. After the close of trading on Tuesday, it reported earnings of 64 cents a share for the fourth quarter, less than analysts' estimate of 66 cents a share.

AIR PRODUCTS TO INVEST $270 MILLION IN CALIFORNIA

Air Products and Chemicals Inc. said yesterday that it would invest $270 million in eight new and existing plants in California in the next two years. Air Products, an Allentown, Pa., supplier of industrial gases and related equipment, said it would build three hydrogen plants to provide nearly 200 million standard cubic feet of hydrogen a day for the processing of clean fuels.

REGAL CINEMAS TO GROW IN SOUTHERN MOVIE CHAIN DEAL

Regal Cinemas Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn., said yesterday that it was acquiring Litchfield Theaters Ltd. for about $63.8 million in stock, increasing the number of movie screens it owns in the South. Litchfield, based in Pawleys Island, S.C., operates 24 theaters with 172 screens in six Southern states. Regal, in business since 1989, owns 48 multiscreen theaters with 372 screens in 10 Eastern states. Regal is buying Litchfield in exchange for 2.5 million of its shares, which were up $2.75, at $25.75, in Nasdaq trading.

SHARP TO EXPAND U.S. LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY PLANT

The Sharp Corporation of Japan said yesterday that it would spend $30 million to expand a liquid crystal display panel manufacturing plant in Camas, Wash., adding about 160 jobs. The plant will have the capacity to produce 10,000 active-matrix color LCD panels a month when it opens in October, said Joseph Pinzone, human resources director at the Sharp Microelectronics Technology unit. The LCD screens will be sold to makers of laptop and notebook computers and will also be used in Sharp products, including camcorders. The expansion will make it the company's only plant outside Japan to make active-matrix panels.

CHIEF SAYS MERRY-GO-ROUND MAY CLOSE 100 TO 200 STORES

The chairman and chief executive of Merry-Go-Round Enterprises, Leonard Weinglass, has said that his company may shut 100 to 200 stores in the next year. In an interview published yesterday in Women's Wear Daily, Mr. Weinglass said the company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, had not determined how many stores it would close. Merry-Go-Round, based in Joppa, Md., said in December that it would shut 30 poorly performing stores in addition to its earlier plan to close 50 Chess King stores. It operates 1,450 stores under names including Merry-Go-Round, DeJaiz, Attivo and Cignal.
