Charles Henry Hamilton, a retired executive of Media General Inc. who was long active in the Associated Press Managing Editors Association and other press organizations, died yesterday at the Stratford Hall Nursing Center in Richmond, where he lived. He was 90. He had been in declining health for several months, said a granddaughter, Anne Hamilton.

The New York Times Company has agreed to sell its three British golf magazines to IPC Magazines, a subsidiary of the British-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier P.L.C., the two companies said yesterday. The magazines, which are published and circulated in Britain, are Golf World (U.K.), Golf Weekly and Golf World Industry News.

The Apache Corporation, based in Houston, said yesterday that it wanted to buy all 300 oilfields that Texaco Inc. put on the market on Tuesday, assuming the price was right. The chairman of Apache, Raymond Plank, declined to say what he considered the "right" price to be. Mr. Plank said his interest came with a condition: Apache will not participate in an auction and wants to negotiate the purchase with Texaco officials alone. Texaco said it planned to divest half its 600 United States oilfields and slash its payroll to cut costs. A spokeswoman for Texaco, the No. 4 oil company in the country, said yesterday that the company was holding talks about the sale but would not identify the potential buyers. The Texaco fields for sale contain the equivalent of 200 million barrels of oil, enough to nearly double Apache's 1993 reserves of 231 million barrels.

California Federal Bank said yesterday that it had sold $439 million in performing and delinquent property loans and properties, the third selloff by the institution since April. California Federal did not disclose the price. The sale is part of a plan to reduce the Los Angeles savings bank's delinquent loans. In May, California Federal agreed to sell $350 million worth of performing and delinquent income-producing properties to Argo Partnership L.P., after selling $231 million in assets in April. With the three sales, California Federal has cut its delinquent assets to 2 percent of total assets, which is in line with the industry.

Shares of the TJX Companies -- whose largest business is T.J. Maxx -- fell 13 percent after the company said that it expected to report earnings per share for the second quarter, which ends July 31, to fall as much as 33 percent. In trading on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday, the stock fell $2.875, to $19.125. The company, a retailer of off-price apparel, said it expected net income of 22 cents to 27 cents a share, compared with 33 cents a share for the same period last year, because sales in May and June were lower than expected. Analysts had been expecting the retailer to earn 36 cents a share in the quarter.

Motorola Inc. signed an agreement yesterday to buy I.B.M.'s 50 percent stake in the Ardis wireless data network, making Motorola the sole owner. Terms were not disclosed. Ardis, based in Lincolnshire, Ill., is a public wireless packet data network. Started by the International Business Machines Corporation and Motorola four years ago, Ardis provides wireless data communications in more than 400 metropolitan areas. Earlier this year, Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Ill., introduced its Envoy wireless personal communicator and analysts believe Motorola intends to use the Ardis network for Envoy services.

A Canadian judge yesterday told the junior creditors of the Trizec Corporation to present their demands Monday for the real estate company's proposed $1.37 billion revamping plan. The junior debt holders had rejected the plan on Wednesday. All other creditors voted to approve the plan. Trizec is operating under Canadian court protection. A lawyer for the junior creditors declined to comment.

Schroders P.L.C. said today that it would buy the remaining 50 percent of its American investment-banking affiliate, Wertheim Schroeder & Company, in a drive to expand its worldwide business. Schroders, a 176-year-old British investment bank, will pay $92 million to take full control of the New York-based firm.

The closely held United States Sugar Corporation will close South Bay Growers, its vegetable farming and marketing business, on Sept. 4, resulting in the loss of 1,336 jobs. "After struggling for more than a decade and losing over $10.6 million this year, South Bay Growers is going out of the vegetable business," United States Sugar's president, J. Nelson Fairbanks, told employees yesterday. South Bay, which grows lettuce, celery and other vegetables, also operates a salad processing plant, which will remain open while a purchaser is sought.

The Bell Atlantic Corporation said yesterday that it would employ technology to automatically forward calls to customers in all of its cellular service areas. The technology links non-wire-line cellular systems with wire-line cellular systems, which operate on different radio frequencies. Bell Atlantic is the wire-line operator in markets within its five-state service area. It also owns non-wire-line cellular franchises in other markets throughout the East Coast and Southwest. Using the new technology, customers will be able to receive calls in any of the markets in 15 states covered by Bell Atlantic Mobile service. Under existing technology, callers have to enter a special code and know exactly where the recipient is to connect a call. Bell Atlantic last week announced plans to merge its Bell Atlantic Mobile unit with the cellular unit of the Nynex Corporation.
