Has "the zipper" lost its zip? Since 1928, news headlines flashed in a ticker-tape beat around the 1 Times Square building at Broadway and 42d Street. Operators included New York Newsday, Life magazine and The New York Times. But since Jan. 1 -- when the British media conglomerate Pearson began renting the zipper -- the headlines frequently lapse into block-long gaps. And the copy is jarring for those accustomed to tabloid-style local news updates. There are public-service announcements and ads for Pearson's Penguin Books and its Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. And there are celebrity greetings from the likes of President Clinton, Jay Leno, outgoing and incoming Governors Cuomo and Pataki and the playwright Wendy Wasserstein ("Looking for a date").

As Russian forces pummeled the rebel capital, Grozny, with shells from artillery positioned in several nearby villages, President Boris N. Yeltsin vowed yet again to rein in the furious attack.

MCI Venture With Paging Companies

MCI Communications plunged into the wireless communications business today, saying that it had signed agreements with Paging Network Inc. and the Skytel Corporation to provide nationwide messaging services. MCI had been searching for a wireless partner since a deal to buy a stake in Nextel Communications collapsed four months ago. By teaming with the Paging Network and Skytel, MCI hopes to become a big force in the wireless market, while bolstering its long-distance business. Pagenet, based in Dallas, is the largest paging company in the United States, with more than 4.1 million subscribers. Skytel, a unit of the Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corporation, offers nationwide and international paging services, primarily to business customers.

200 TO BE FURLOUGHED AT DETROIT HAMTRAMCK PLANT

The General Motors Corporation will idle 200 workers at its Detroit Hamtramck plant starting on Jan. 17 as it cuts output because of weakening luxury car sales. The plant will be closed for one week starting next Monday, Ben Ippolito, a spokesman for G.M.'s Cadillac Luxury Car division, said yesterday. "After that, we will have approximately 200 fewer workers as a result of a line-speed reduction," Mr. Ippolito said. The Detroit Hamtramck plant makes Cadillac DeVille, Seville and Eldorado cars using 4,500 workers on two shifts.

SBC COMMUNICATIONS TAKING A CHARGE AGAINST EARNINGS

SBC Communications Inc. said yesterday that it would take a one-time charge of $34 million in the fourth quarter because of its equity stake in Telefonos de Mexico S.A., which has been battered by the 30 percent decline in the Mexican peso. The company said the charge, which would amount to 6 cents a share, would not have a material effect on the company, which is based in San Antonio. Shares in SBC, formerly the Southwestern Bell Corporation, were up 12.5 cents at $40.75.

AMERICAN MAIZE-PRODUCTS REJECTS OFFER TO SELL

The American Maize-Products Company said yesterday that its directors had rejected an offer to sell the company for $32 a share, or about $326.4 million. The board determined that the price was inadequate, the company said. Edward P. Norris, chief financial officer, declined to name the bidder. He said the offer was received last week. Mr. Norris said the company's stock had never traded as high as $32. The issue, which touched a 52-week high of $27.25 on Thursday, closed yesterday at $27. The company makes corn syrup, syrup solids and starches for the food, beverage and drug industries.

JOB LOSSES AND STORE CLOSINGS SET IN REVAMPING

Supervalu Inc. said yesterday that it would close 9 stores, convert 11 others and eliminate more than 1,000 jobs as part of its previously announced restructuring plan. Supervalu said it had agreed to sell its Twin Valu supercenter in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and 15 acres of land in Parma, Ohio, to another undisclosed retailer. Supervalu will close the store on March 1. Supervalu will also close and expects to sell a Twin Value supercenter in Euclid, Ohio. About 800 employees, many of them part-time workers, will lose their jobs as a result of the two supercenter closings.

FEDERATED STORES SET TO DISMISS 650 EMPLOYEES

Federated Department Stores Inc. said yesterday that it would dismiss 650 workers in its Abraham & Straus/Jordan Marsh division as part of that operation's merger into the Macy's East unit. Federated expects to take a $35 million charge against fourth-quarter earnings to cover the cost of the dismissals and transfers. Federated acquired R. H. Macy & Company last month. It has said it will fold the A.& S.-/Jordan Marsh division into Macy's East and make some job cuts. The job cuts will take place at the central offices of the A.&S./Jordan Marsh division in Brooklyn in four stages, starting with 302 workers around March 10. Federated, which is based in Cincinnati, also said it would shift 250 employees from the Brooklyn office to Macy's East offices in Manhattan.

NOVEN STOCK TRIMMED BY LOWER INVESTMENT OPINION

The shares of Noven Pharmaceuticals Inc. tumbled yesterday to their lowest price in a year after an analyst at Volpe, Welty & Company, David Steinberg, lowered his investment opinion because of concern that a competing estrogen skin patch might beat Noven's product to market. Shares of Miami-based Noven tumbled $3.25, or 28 percent, to $8, in Nasdaq trading yesterday of almost 2.5 million shares. The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company received approval on Dec. 22 from the Food and Drug Administration to market its estrogen patch in the United States, a 3M spokeswoman, Laura Sutton, said.
