2 Media Giants Seen Forming A Rival to ESPN

In an effort to become major competitors to ESPN, Tele-Communications Inc. and the News Corporation are negotiating the formation of a new global sports network, two people with knowledge of the discussions said yesterday. The cable service, which could be announced as early as this week, would be run by the News Corporation and Liberty Media, the programming arm of Tele-Communications. Liberty owns a number of regional sports cable services that could provide programming for the service. The News Corporation, led by Rupert Murdoch, has been aggressively acquiring sports rights in the United States and overseas.

While popular political wisdom holds that Republican primaries are dominated by right wing voters, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll shows that these voters are a disparate group, much like the party at large, and are sharply divided on issues like abortion, immigration and Medicare. And more than most Americans, they are fractured over the potent issues of protecting minorities, the role of religious conservatives and Government help for the poor.

NETSCAPE CUTS PRICES ON ITS INTERNET SOFTWARE

The Netscape Communications Corporation said yesterday that it had cut prices as much as 57 percent on some Internet server software because of a more competitive market. Its server software is used to publish and relay information on the Internet. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., is known for its browsing software but plans to get most of its profits from the more expensive server software and said it wanted to speed up acceptance of its servers to lock in its position in the market. Netscape's shares gained $7, to $88.50, in Nasdaq trading yesterday.

DREYFUS PRESIDENT TO RESIGN AFTER 10 MONTHS

Robert E. Riley plans to resign as president and chief operating officer of the Dreyfus Corporation, the mutual fund unit of the Mellon Bank Corporation, just 10 months after taking the job. Mr. Riley, 65, has been named president and chief executive at Leggat McCall Properties, a closely held commercial real estate company based in Boston, Mellon said yesterday. Mr. Riley will be succeeded by Christopher M. Condron, vice chairman of Mellon Bank, as of Nov. 30. Mr. Condron will supervise Mellon's investment management subsidiaries which, with Dreyfus, oversee about $200 billion in assets.

U.S. AND AUSTRALIAN UTILITIES BUY SOLARIS POWER

The General Public Utilities Corporation of Parsippany, N.J., and the Australian Gas Light Company have jointly bought Solaris Power, an electricity distributor, from the Australian state of Victoria for $717 million. Solaris supplies electricity to the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The purchase is General Public Utilities' first expansion into the Pacific Rim region.

Powerwave to Make Debut

The Power Computing Corporation, the first company to license Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh operating system, said it planned to introduce its newest line of Macintosh clones on Monday. The new Powerwave computers, which feature the fastest Power PC processors, cost between $3,199 and $4,499. The new 604 Power PC processors are manufactured by the International Business Machines Corporation and Motorola Inc. Power Computing, which is based in Austin, is planning to ship 100,000 units by May 1996, Stephen Khang, the founder of the company, said.

Honda to Make Civics Overseas

The Honda Motor Company said today that it had stopped exporting Civic passenger cars to the United States last month and would shift production of the model to American factories in an effort to reduce the effect of the strong yen. Honda said it planned to increase production to 720,000 from 610,000 by 1997, at plants in East Liberty, Ohio, and Alliston, Ontario, as part of the plan for North America it introduced in July 1994.

U.S. Budget Deficit Falls to 6-Year Low

The United States posted a $163.81 billion budget deficit in the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30, the smallest shortfall in six years, the Treasury said on Friday. Strong corporate profits helped bolster revenue while program cuts helped slow Federal spending. In September alone, the Government posted a budget surplus of $7.286 billion, reflecting quarterly tax returns. The amount was more than 70 percent higher than the surplus of $4.266 billion in September 1994.

Mobile Phone Retail Plans

Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile said it would open nine mobile communications retail stores in New York City next year, creating 150 jobs. It said it would also invest $200 million to upgrade and expand the region's cellular network next year.

Machine Tool Orders Rose in September
