Oracle in Talks to Offer Video News Service

The Oracle Corporation, a leading maker of software for managing large computer data bases, is in discussions with several telephone, computer and news organizations to create a nationwide digital video service that would let users of personal computers customize their own video newscasts or conduct on-line research from video news archives. The discussions, which are not complete, have involved the long-distance carriers AT&T and MCI Communications, the chip maker Intel and the news organizations CNN and Reuters, among other companies, according to people familiar with the plans.

Sun Microsystems Inc. and the Eastman Kodak Company extended their decade-long relationship by signing a five-year contract under which Sun could sell up to $250 million in computer products for Kodak's digital imaging system, the companies said yesterday. The Sun work station is the heart of Kodak's digital imaging work station -- a system that uses computers to develop and print photos. Sun Microsystems sells Kodak the computer and software; Kodak then modifies the software and adds a film scanner, a photo disk writer and thermal printer. The entire system costs about $100,000. Photo finishers buy the system to offer consumers the option of putting traditional photos onto photo compact disks.

PENSKE BUYING LEASEWAY FOR $200 MILLION

The Leaseway Transportation Corporation agreed yesterday to be acquired by the Penske Truck Leasing Company of Reading, Pa., for about $200 million, or $20 a share, in cash. The acquisition, which was approved by the Leaseway board, will create the nation's second-largest supplier of transportation and logistical support to manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, Ron Hutchison, Leaseway's vice president and treasurer, said. Shares of Leaseway, which is based in Cleveland, soared $6.78 to $19.72 in Nasdaq trading yesterday. Penske's chairman is Roger Penske, the former race car driver who is also chairman of the Detroit Diesel Corporation.

PAINE WEBBER IS SAID TO BE CONSIDERING JOB CUTS

Paine Webber Group Inc. may eliminate as many as 500 jobs, or 3 percent of its total work force, in an effort to cut its compensation costs, traders at the brokerage firm said yesterday. Paine Webber did not decide on the cuts during a board meeting yesterday, a person familiar with the firm said. Paine Webber is considering the dismissals as it tries to cut compensation costs by $20 million, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. A spokeswoman for Paine Webber declined to comment on the report. The possible cuts come after Paine Webber acquired Kidder, Peabody & Company from the General Electric Company last year, increasing Paine Webber's work force by 14 percent, to about 16,600 people.

SCOTT PAPER TO MOVE HEADQUARTERS FROM PHILADELPHIA

The Scott Paper Company, which has been based in the Philadelphia area for more than a century, said yesterday it would move its corporate headquarters to Boca Raton, Fla. Scott said it would sell its 55-acre corporate complex outside of Philadelphia to the Koll Company for $39 million. Boca Raton has offered Scott $280,000 in grants as an incentive. Albert Dunlap, chairman and chief executive of Scott, the world's largest tissue company, sold his Boca Raton house to Scott for $3.3 million when he was hired in April. He bought a house in Boca Raton last week for $1.8 million, The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported. Scott has eliminated 71 percent of its corporate staff since last summer. Scott's stock fell $2.875, to $82.625, yesterday.

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. is inviting other investors to challenge Wallace McCain's takeover bid of $1.3 billion (Canadian), or $868 million (United States), a financial adviser to the company said yesterday. Last week, Mr. McCain, co-founder and former president of McCain Foods Ltd., and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board offered $13.75 to $15 a share for the Toronto-based food processor. But "there are other people looking at the company in terms of being in a position to make other offers," said David Ward, managing director of mergers and acquisitions at Nesbitt Burns Inc., which is advising Maple Leaf's independent directors.

PLAN TO CONTRACT OUT OPERATION OF SERVICE CENTERS

To lower its costs, United Parcel Service of America Inc. said yesterday it would contract the function of its customer-service centers around the United States to an outside company. The Atlanta-based shipping company "will do everything possible" to relocate the 5,800 employees at the centers, which number more than 65, a company spokesman said. Transferring customer-service operations to a still-unnamed company will occur in the next two years, providing time to find slots for the displaced workers. The centers, which provide information about services, rates and delivery schedules, are likely to be consolidated to no more than 12 sites. U.P.S. has about 300,000 employees worldwide.

S.E.C. Official Set to Retire

The Securities and Exchange Commission said today that its chief accountant, Walter Schuetze, would retire from the agency at the end of this month. Mr. Schuetze, who has been the S.E.C.'s top accountant since January 1992, has been active in his supervision of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and he made news in 1993 by chiding accountants in private practice for being cheerleaders for their clients.
