It was vintage Rupert Murdoch. On Thursday evening, July 18, Mr. Murdoch, the Australian-born chairman of the News Corporation, and the American entrepreneur Ronald O. Perelman lingered after dinner on the outdoor deck of the investment banker Herbert Allen's home in Sun Valley, Idaho. Mr. Perelman had wanted to sell his company, New World Communications with its 10 television stations, to Mr. Murdoch for months, but the two had haggled over price. Now Mr. Perelman was playing hardball, threatening a deal to shut out the News Corporation. "He had me over a barrel," Mr. Murdoch conceded.

Rupert Murdoch calls each of his children "darling," but one day he hopes one will be called "chief executive." For Mr. Murdoch is not just building a company, he is building a dynasty. Already two of his three youngest children -- Elisabeth, 27, and Lachlan, 24 -- are in corporate training, working directly for Mr. Murdoch's most trusted executives. Although Mr. Murdoch contends that the News Corporation's board will ultimately decide who runs the company if he can no longer do so, and that he has made no choice, several people who know the family give the lead to Lachlan, who is being groomed in the Australian newspaper, television and cable businesses.

The International Business Machines Corporation has at least temporarily withdrawn print advertisements that were part of a large campaign promoting its role at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Scott Brooks, a spokesman for I.B.M. on site in Atlanta, said yesterday that the company had "reconsidered some ads" that were to have run yesterday in USA Today and The Wall Street Journal "in light of how our system performance has been perceived." His reference was to well-publicized difficulties with a system supplying results of Olympic events to 15 news services.

The Chantal Pharmaceutical Corporation said yesterday that its chief financial officer had resigned and that the company would move to Florida from Los Angeles. The chief financial officer, Gary Burnison, who joined Chantal three weeks ago, left for "personal reasons," the company said in a statement. Chantal said that it had "identified" a new chief financial officer, but did not reveal that person's name. The company also did not say where in Florida it was moving. For the nine months ending March 31, the company lost $6.9 million, During that period, Chantal Pharmaceutical spent more to market its Ethocyn anti-wrinkle cream than it took in from sales. Chantal announced the resignation and its relocation plans after the market closed. Earlier, its shares fell 75 cents, to $3.25, on the Nasdaq small capitalization market.

COMPANY NEWS;FOUNDATION HEALTH SHARES FALL AS EARNINGS RISE

The stock of the Foundation Health Corporation fell yesterday, even though the company released earnings in line with Wall Street estimates. The company said that its fourth-quarter earnings rose 12 percent, citing one-time gains from the sale of two independent practice associations and lower taxes. The company, based in Rancho Cordova, Calif., operates managed-health-care plans. It said its net income rose to $43.6 million, or 74 cents a share, from $38.8 million, or 68 cents, a year ago. Wall Street had been expecting earnings of 74 cents. Shares of Foundation fell $1.875, to $25.875.
