The Kansas City Life Insurance Company, which had $440.2 million in revenue last year, is buying the GuideOne Life Insurance Company for about $78 million in cash, increasing its number of customers, the company said yesterday. GuideOne Life, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, is owned by the GuideOne Financial Group and has 75,000 policyholders, Kansas City's general counsel, William Schalekamp, said. Kansas City, which was founded in 1895 and is based in Kansas City, Mo., had $3.9 billion in assets as of the end of last year.

The Cendant Corporation said yesterday that it had acquired an affiliated online travel company, Trip Network, consolidating its fourth off-balance-sheet investment. Terms were not disclosed, and the amount was not material to Cendant, the company said. Trip Network is one of the largest online travel sites. Cendant, based in New York, franchises hotels, including Days Inn, and residential brokerage firms like Coldwell Banker, and owns the Avis rental car business. Cendant said the purchase will simplify its accounting as it addresses investor concerns about disclosure of the results of affiliates.
