Journalists like to caricature President Clinton as a man of gargantuan appetites who heaps too much on his plate in more ways than one. But when it comes to excess, it is hard to top the press itself. Consider the orgy over Whitewater. Since January there have been hundreds of major newspaper articles on this subject, many on the front page; eye-catching newsmagazine covers, and countless talk show face-offs. As of Friday, the nightly news on ABC, CBS and NBC had devoted 220 minutes to Whitewater this year, nearly three times as much as for health care, according to Andrew Tyndall, whose Tyndall Report monitors TV news.

LEVITZ TO BUY CHICAGO FURNITURE RETAILER

Levitz Furniture Inc. said yesterday that its Levitz Furniture Corporation unit would buy the John M. Smyth Company, a Chicago-based furniture retailer, for about $50 million. Levitz, based in Boca Raton, Fla., is the largest specialty furniture retailer in the United States.

LDDS COMMUNICATIONS TO ACQUIRE ACC FOR STOCK

LDDS Communications Inc. and the ACC Corporation said yesterday that they had signed an agreement under which ACC shareholders would receive one share of LDDS stock for each share of ACC held. ACC's stock jumped $3.50, to $25.25, in Nasdaq trading, while LDDS slid $1.375, to $27.125.

MORRISON KNUDSEN TO OVERHAUL SANTA FE LOCOMOTIVES

The Morrison Knudsen Corporation will overhaul 278 locomotives for the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation in the next 12 years under its first long-term contract with a major freight railroad. Morrison Knudsen said it would overhaul about 50 locomotives a year and would be responsible for scheduled maintenance and repairs for the fleet.

DAIMLER TO BUY BAVARIA'S STAKE IN DEUTSCHE AEROSPACE

Daimler-Benz A.G., Germany's largest industrial company, said yesterday that it would buy the 8.58 percent stake in Deutsche Aerospace A.G. held by the German state of Bavaria for 424 million marks, or about $251 million. The move, which will increase Daimler's stake in Deutsche Aerospace to 93.8 percent, still needs approval from the regional parliament, Daimler said.

G.M. Urges a Halt in Use of Some Pickups

The General Motors Corporation has told owners of about 2,500 compressed natural gas-powered pickup trucks to stop using them, after two tanks ruptured during refueling, injuring employees at two utility companies. A G.M. spokeswoman, Linda Cook, said about 90 percent of the 1992 and 1993 model trucks are used by utility fleets in Texas and California. G.M. is investigating the cause of the accidents with the company that converts the trucks to natural gas, Production Automotive Systems of Troy, Mich., and with Comdyne Inc., a West Liberty, Ohio, company that builds the fuel cylinders for the trucks.

GREYHOUND LINES ADOPTS DEFENSE TO AVERT HOSTILE BIDS

Greyhound Lines Inc. said yesterday that it had adopted a "poison pill," a provision that makes its stock prohibitively expensive to an unfriendly bidder. The company said a drop in its stock price had made it a more attractive takeover target. It also said that Connor, Clark & Company, a Toronto investment firm, had accumulated 18.2 percent of Greyhound stock "for investment purposes." Shares of Greyhound fell as low as $9.50 on March 10 from a high of $15.875 on Sept. 22, but closed at $11.375 yesterday. Under the poison pill, shareholders will be allowed to buy 1 percent of a new preferred share for $35 if an outside investor acquires a stake of more than 15 percent or offers to buy more than 30 percent of the voting shares.

Gillette Chief's Salary Up 17%

The chairman of the Gillette Company, Alfred M. Zeien, received $908,333 in salary in 1993, a 17 percent increase over his 1992 pay, and his overall cash compensation was $1.7 million, an 18 percent increase. In its proxy statement, Gillette said it had increased his bonus to $675,000 from $600,000 the year before, though the 13 percent increase in Mr. Zeien's bonus was smaller than in 1992, when it rose 43 percent.
